Exciting News: Downloadable Worksheets Now Available!
Teacher and students can download over 500 free worksheets each with a listening quiz and language puzzles.
Fellow ESL Teachers,
I'm thrilled to share an update about a powerful new resource that's now available on ELLLO—something that could transform how you approach listening comprehension in your classroom.
What's New?
We've added comprehensive worksheets for every lesson across all proficiency levels (A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1). These printable materials allow you to take Ello's listening content offline, giving you flexibility in how and where you use them with your students.
How It Works
When you click on any lesson, you'll find the familiar online materials—video, script, grammar review, quiz, and puzzle. But now, there's also a downloadable worksheet section featuring:
- A full worksheet covering all four conversations in the lesson
- Individual conversation worksheets with more detailed, robust activities for focused practice
What Makes These Worksheets Special?
Each worksheet is structured as a "micro lesson" built around a single conversation and includes three key components:
1. Enhanced Listening Comprehension
Unlike the single-question online quiz, each worksheet features three comprehension questions, giving students more opportunities to demonstrate understanding. Students can access the audio easily through QR codes or links.
2. Interactive Language Puzzles
Every worksheet includes a unique puzzle designed to help students notice language patterns and grammatical structures. Examples include:
- Word ordering exercises for grammar practice
- Fill-in-the-blank challenges focusing on correct word choice
- Letter scramble activities for vocabulary reinforcement
- "One and Only" puzzles that work on function words using first-letter clues
3. Discussion Questions
Each worksheet concludes with speaking prompts that students can use for pair work, group discussions, or individual reflection.
Why This Matters for Your Teaching
Slowing Down Learning: These activities require students to pause and think, which research shows enhances language acquisition and retention.
Noticing Language: The puzzle format encourages students to observe patterns, rules, and tendencies in English grammar—a crucial step in developing linguistic competence.
Classroom Flexibility: Whether you need a quick warm-up, homework assignment, or full lesson activity, these worksheets adapt to your needs.
Digital Detox: Give students a break from screens while still engaging with high-quality listening content.
The Numbers
We currently there are approximately 500 worksheets available—roughly 100 for each proficiency level. That's four different worksheets for each conversation, giving you plenty of material to work with throughout the semester.
Practical Classroom Applications
These worksheets are incredibly versatile. You can:
- Print them for in-class activities during your listening lessons
- Assign them as homework for independent practice
- Use them as assessment tools to gauge comprehension
- Incorporate them into learning stations or centers
- Provide them as extra practice for students who need additional support
The answer keys are included at the bottom of each worksheet, and students can verify their answers by listening to the audio again—promoting autonomous learning.
Looking Ahead
In future communications, I'll share specific interactive techniques for using these worksheets in engaging ways with your students. There are some really creative approaches that can make these activities even more dynamic in the classroom setting.
