Conversation 1

Man: Do you have any paper?
Woman: I have some, but not much.
Man: How much do you have?
Woman: I have about 10 sheets of paper.
Man: Oh, that is plenty. I just need five sheets.
Woman: OK, here you go.

Conversation 2

Man: Do we have any eggs?
Woman: We have some. Maybe three eggs.
Man: OK, and do we have any cheese?
Woman: No, we don’t have any cheese.
Man: Oh, that’s too bad. I want to make an omelet.
Woman: Well, I can go to the store and buy some.
Man: No, that’s OK. I’ll just have toast.

Conversation 3

Man: Care for some coffee?
Woman: I would love some.
Man: Cream or sugar?
Woman: No sugar, but I’ll take a little cream, please!
Man: Oh, you know what, we don’t have any cream. Is milk OK?
Woman: That’s fine.

Conversation 4

Man: So, what did you get for lunch?
Woman: I bought some stuff to make sandwiches.
Man: Oh great! Did you buy any potato chips?
Woman: No, I did not. I did not see any.
Man: That’s OK. We have some pretzels.
Woman: That will work.

Basic Quantifiers

Point 1: Singular nouns use an article before the noun. One can replace the noun.

(Q) Do you have a car?

  1. (A) Yes, I have a car.
  2. (A) Yes, I have one.
  3. (N) No, I don't have a car.
  4. (N) No, I don't have one.
Point 2: Uncountable nouns use any and some before the noun. Any and some can replace the noun.

(Q) Do you have any paper?

  1. (A) Yes, I have some paper.
  2. (A) Yes, I have some.
  3. (N) No, I don't have any paper
  4. (N) No, I don't have any.
Point 3: Countable plural nouns use any and some before the noun. Any and some can replace the noun.

(Q) Do you have any books?

  1. (A) Yes, I have some books.
  2. (A) Yes, I have some.
  3. (N) No, I don't have any books.
  4. (N) No, I don't have any.
  5. (N) I have no books.
Point 4: For negative statements, all forms can use no to replace the determiner.
  1. (N) There is not a park in town.
  2. (N) There is no park in town.
  3. (N) I don't have any time.
  4. (N) I have no time.
  5. (N) I don't have any international friends.
  6. (N) I have no international friends.
