Is that because he’s handsome or because he’s a good actor?

A 'handsome' man is very good-looking and attractive.  We don't usually use this word to describe women or objects.  Notice the following:

  1. After he got his hair cut he looked very handsome.
  2. He has always been a handsome man.

well respected

I like him because he is very well respected in Hollywood.

A person is 'well respected' if other people think that he always acts in the correct way or that he is talented.  Notice the following:

  1. She is a very well respected author of mystery novels.
  2. His opinion about the economy has always been well respected.


You look at the other actors and they’ve all had these scandals.

A 'scandal' is a bad or inappropriate situation that brings public attention.  We use this word when we talk about famous people.  Notice the following:

  1. She was well respected in her career and never had any public scandals.
  2. The scandal of his affair was on the front page of all the newspapers.


She’s very wild and keeps partying.

If a girl is 'wild,' she is crazy and doesn't follow the rules.  Notice the following:

  1. Her dog is very wild and likes to bark.
  2. The concert was really wild.  Everyone was singing and dancing.

first impression

From first impressions, from the first look, definitely the smile and eyes.

A 'first impression' is how you feel about a person when you first meet him or a place the first time you see it.  Notice the following:

  1. My first impression was that he was very serious, but he was actually very funny.
  2. It is important to make a good first impression when you are looking for a job.
