cocktail

You’re at a party, which would you rather have: beer, wine or a cocktail?

A 'cocktail' is an alcoholic drink made with hard alcohol, such as rum, vodka, tequila or gin, and soda or fruit juice.  Notice the following:

  1. He feels really sick today because he drank too many cocktails last night.
  2. What's you favorite cocktail?

engage

I find that I emotionally engage with the book.

To 'engage' with something is to attach yourself or connect with it.  Notice the following:

  1. Even though he was busy I found a way to engage him in conversation.
  2. You look very engaged in thought.

can't stand

I can’t stand rain.

If you 'can't stand,' something then you hate it.  Notice the following:

  1. I like pizza, but I won't eat it because I can't stand black olives.
  2. Some of the songs on the album are good, but I can't stand most of them.

I'm with you

I’m with you on that.

'I'm with you' is the same as I agree with you.  Notice the following:

  1. Sorry, I don't agree.  I'm not with you in this particular argument.
  2. I'm totally with you on your thoughts about the political candidate.

pass the time

To pass the time at night you can watch TV.

'To pass the time' is spend your time or to do something that fills your time and makes it feel like it goes faster.  Notice the following:

  1. In the evenings, I usually pass the time in the park, sitting next to the lake.
  2. How do you pass the time for 15 hours on an airplane?
