Speaking Tip #4 - Paraphrasing

See how doing this speaking activity is a good challenge for more advanced learners.

Try it yourself! Play the audio and see if you can do it.

Hi guys, what's up? This is Todd from ELLLO, and I am going to go over speaking tip number four. And this is paraphrasing. Now, paraphrasing means you say the same thing, the same message, the same meaning, but with different words. And this is a great activity for more advanced students, and also for lower students, to test your grammar fluency and your speaking fluency. So, if you can say the same thing in different ways, then your English is pretty good. So, what we do is we play the audio, we listen to the audio, and then we change what we hear. We don't repeat, like in tip number two - no, this time we change one word, two words, or many words, but we keep the message, we keep the meaning the same. So, I'll start with number one, here, 'my family'. So, here we go.

'My family.'

'My family' - can't change that one.

'Hey, Todd. Tell me about your family.'

'So, Todd, what's your family like?'

'Well, my family is very nice.'

'Well, I'm lucky that I have a really nice family.'

'There are five people in my family.'

'We're pretty small - there's just four of us.'

'My mom, my dad, my two sisters and myself.'

'There's my mom and dad, and, of course, my two sisters. So, actually, there's five of us.'

'Nice! Are you the oldest?'

'So, are you the youngest or the oldest?'

'I am the youngest child.'

'I am the baby of the family.'

'But I am an adult now.'

'But I'm all grown up.'

'I am forty-five years old.'

'This year, I turned forty-five.'

So, as you can see, it's very easy to hear something and then change it and keep the exact same meaning. So, this grammar flexibility is really important. So, this is fluency. Fluency is getting the message out quickly. We're not worried about grammar accuracy - here, we're worried about fluency. How fast can you get the message out? And if you can say the same thing in different ways, you are fluent or you are becoming fluent. If you can just say one way...that means you're not really that fluent.

Alright, so that's tip number four, paraphrasing. Alright. And, so, next, we're gonna move onto the questions, actually, and we will have question number five, which will be - or, tip number five, which is question response.
