TODD: Hey, everybody. Hi, this is the Todd, the teacher from ELLLO, and in this video we will look at Speaking Tip 5.

Now we have a new audio segment. We are going to look at the questions. So in the questions folder for each level, you have 15 audio files. Each file has five questions. We will listen to the questions and give an answer for each question. But here is the catch, here is the special thing. You can test your English fluency. Here’s how.

After each question, you have 8 seconds to say an answer. So the more you can say in 8 seconds, the higher your English speaking is. For example, if you are an advanced speaker, you can probably say three or four short statements, a sentence or clause, in 8 seconds. Three or four. If you are an intermediate student, you can probably say two, maybe sometimes three, but usually two short statements.

If you are a high beginner, just one, but a complete sentence, a complete clause. If you are a low beginner, you probably can answer the question if you understand and you can just say one or two words that answers the question. So what are you? Are you advanced, intermediate, or are you a beginner? So I will do it, of course, as a native speaker so I will be advanced. But notice how after each question I can say three or four short statements. Here we go.

RACHEL (Audio): Level 2, Lesson 2, Simple Present. You will hear five questions using simple present. You have 8 seconds to answer or repeat each question. 1.) When do you get up?

TODD: I get up at 6:00, Sundays I get up at 7:00. On the weekends, I sleep in a bit, but usually I get up at 6:00.

RACHEL (Audio): 2.) Who do you live with?

TODD: Now, I live alone. I live in a big house. I teach overseas, so it’s just me at the moment.

RACHEL (Audio): 3.) Where do you live?

TODD: I live in a town called Beppu. It’s in Japan, it’s in Western Japan. It’s a tourist town and a university town.

RACHEL (Audio): 4.) How do you get to school or work?

TODD: Fortunately, I have a car so I drive. I love driving. It’s very beautiful. Sometimes I take the bus.

RACHEL (Audio): 5.) What do you eat for breakfast?

TODD: Most days, I have oatmeal. I always have coffee. Occasionally, I cook breakfast but it’s rare.

RACHEL (Audio): That ends the lesson. Thanks for participating.

TODD: Okay. So as you can see, it was easy for me because I am a teacher and it’s my language. But if you’re advanced, you can do three or four. So even the lower level of questions, the lower grammar points, it’s a good challenge to see how good your speaking ability is. So even though it’s Level 2, you can use it at all levels. Now for beginners, it’s okay if you just listen and say one or two words. That is fine. And that’s it. That’s your Speaking Tip 5, Question and Response.
