What are your thoughts about gentrification?

Lesson Activities

Hi, my name is Billy and I am currently living in South Africa, and today I will be talking about what are my thoughts about gentrification.

So basically the definition of gentrification is when a maybe rundown area or well-known poor area suddenly becomes more modern or filled with rich people, because now the rich people are moving into that area, maybe to invest or to build bigger houses and such. So what ends up happening most of the time is that poor people who have been in that area usually have to be displaced or they have to move.

Now, my thoughts about this is that it comes with its pros and its cons. For example, the reputation of an area. If the area is known to be more of a poorer area and maybe the government wants to remove that or to change that reputation, I think that would be a good plan.

However, the con to this is that it would be really sad that families who have lived here for in that area, sorry, for many, many years, and now they're suddenly asked to move because the prices of rent or just living in that area has increased now that there is growth, sudden growth and interest in the area. I think if you are thinking of moving to a certain area, you should be considerate of the people who have lived there and who have started calling that place home. So, although it benefits the economy and it benefits the housing industry, it doesn't always benefit the citizens.
