There are many ways to learn vocabulary. Word lists can help. But words are easier to learn in context.

Context means the words around a word. It also means the situation. Context helps you understand the meaning.

ELLLO teaches vocabulary from natural conversations.

Most ELLLO lessons have five or more audio notes. The target words and phrases are blue in the script.

An audio note gives you:

You hear the word several times. You learn its meaning. You also learn how it sounds.

Many audio notes also have a picture. The picture can help you understand the meaning.

One word can have different meanings.

For example, ‘turn up’ can mean to make something louder:

‘Please turn up the volume.’

It can also mean to arrive:

‘Bob turned up at the party.’

ELLLO explains the meaning from that conversation.

People often use several words to share one idea.

For example:

‘I could eat a horse.’

This means, ‘I am very hungry.’

Another example is:

‘You are killing me!’

In a funny conversation, this can mean, ‘You are making me laugh a lot.’

These expressions are hard to learn from a word list. They are easier to learn in a real conversation.

Listen to a lot of English at your level. Notice new words and phrases. Read the audio notes. Listen to the examples several times.
