Yes / No Questions with Verbs

Conversation 1

Man: Do you play sports?
Woman: Yes, I do. I really love basketball.
Man: Do you play on a team?
Woman: Yes, but we do not play in winter.
Man: Oh, do you play in summer?
Woman: Yes, we play in spring and summer.
Man: Do you play at the gym in town?
Woman: No, we play at a high school.

Conversation 2

Man: Do you have any pets?
Woman: Yes, I have a cat. What about you? Do you?
Man: I don't have a cat, but I have a dog.
Woman: Nice! Do you have a big yard?
Man: Yes, I have a big yard, so it is perfect for my dog.
Woman: Yeah, I don't have a yard, so I can only have a cat.

Conversation 3

Man: Do you cook much?
Woman: Yes, I cook all the time. Do you cook?
Man: No, I don't like to cook very much.
Woman: Oh, so do you buy your dinner?
Man: Yes, I buy it at the supermarket.
Woman: Do you buy dinner every night?
Man: Yes, I never cook.
Woman: Wow! That is expensive.

Conversation 4

Man: Do you live downtown?
Woman: Yes, I live near the train station.
Man: Do you take the train to work?
Woman: Yes, most days. What about you?
Man: I live far away, so I drive to work.
Woman: Do you have a nice car?
Man: No, my car is old, but I like it.

Simple Present Yes/No Questions

Point 1: Most simple present Yes/No questions use do to make a basic question.
  1. Do you live here?
  2. Do you like pizza?
  3. Do you play sports?
  4. Do you have a dog?
Point 2: The pronouns I, you, they, we use do in Yes/No questions.
  1. Do you know Bob?
  2. Do I need a ticket?
  3. Do they speak English?
  4. Do we have time?
Point 3: It is more polite to answer Yes/No questions in three words, not one.

Do you know Bob?

  1. Yes, I do.
  2. No, I don't.

Do I need a ticket?

  1. Yes, you do.
  2. No, you don't.

Do they speak English?

  1. Yes, they do.
  2. No, they don't.

Do we have time?

  1. Yes, we do.
  2. No, we don't.

Note: Speakers can say no, I do not or no, I don't but don't is much more commonly used.

Point 4: The third-person singular (he, she, it) uses does in Yes/No questions. This point will be taught in a future lesson.

Does he play tennis?

  1. Yes, she does.
  2. No, she doesn't.

Does he work with you?

  1. Yes, he does.
  2. No, he doesn't.

Does it snow in winter?

  1. Yes, it does.
  2. No, it doesn't.
