Lesson 541: Weight Loss

Topic: Weight Loss and Exercise
Skills: Listening, Vocabulary, Speaking, Grammar
Materials: Audio, worksheet, multiple-choice quiz, online grammar activity

1. Vocabulary Preview

Give students the worksheet.

Have students look at the pictures and match the vocabulary words with the pictures. Review the words briefly as a class if needed.

2. First Listening – Put the Words in Order

Play the conversation once.

Students listen and number the vocabulary words in the order they hear them.

After listening, have students compare their answers with a partner before checking as a class.

3. Comprehension Quiz

Give students the multiple-choice questions.

Before playing the audio again, have students try to answer the questions from memory based on the first listening.

Then play the conversation again. Students listen and confirm or change their answers.

Check the answers as a class.

4. Discussion – What Would They Say?

Use the discussion questions at the bottom of the worksheet.

First, students answer the questions as the speakers in the conversation.

Put students in pairs. One student can be Akane and the other can be Ruth. They answer the questions based on what they learned about each speaker from the conversation.

Example:

Question: How often do you exercise?
Student: I’m Akane. I think I would say...

This encourages students to recall information from the listening and use it in a new way.

5. Discussion – What Would You Say?

Now have students answer the same questions with their own information and opinions.

Students discuss their answers with a partner or in small groups.

This moves the lesson from listening comprehension to personalized speaking.

6. Grammar – Fix the Broken English

Students read the conversation in pairs.

As they read, they choose the correct word or word form for each item in the conversation.

After they finish, play the audio again so students can listen and check their answers.

7. Online Activity

Students can also complete the grammar activity on their phones.

Display the activity on the classroom screen and create a QR code for the page. Students scan the QR code to open the activity.

In pairs, they can:

  1. Read the conversation line by line.

  2. Choose the correct answers.

  3. Submit their answers.

  4. Check their score.

This activity can also be assigned for homework or self-study.

Suggested Lesson Flow

Vocabulary → First Listening → Memory Check → Second Listening → Speaker Role-Play → Personal Discussion → Grammar Activity → Final Listening

The lesson moves from understanding the conversation to remembering it, talking about it, and finally noticing the language used in it.
