Lesson 1553: Likes and Favorites

Level: High Beginner
Topic: Likes and Favorites
Skills: Listening, Vocabulary, Speaking, Grammar
Materials: Audio, worksheet, multiple-choice quiz, grammar activity

1. Vocabulary Warm-Up

Give students the worksheet.

Have them match the words with the pictures. This sets the scene, introduces key vocabulary, and builds interest before listening.

2. First Listening – Put the Words in Order

Play the conversation.

Students listen and number the words or pictures in the order they are mentioned in the conversation.

This is a simple, low-stakes first listening task. Students do not need to understand every detail.

After listening, have students compare their answers with a partner.

3. Optional Second Listening – Add a Detail

For extra practice, play the conversation again.

Students listen and write one additional detail about each word or picture.

Because the conversation is over three minutes long, you may want to skip this step in class with lower-level learners.

It works especially well for homework or self-study.

Students can use the QR code on the worksheet to access the audio on their phones and listen anywhere.

4. Listening for Detail – Multiple-Choice Quiz

Now move from general comprehension to listening for details.

Have students read the multiple-choice questions.

Play the conversation again and have students choose the correct answers.

Afterward, students can compare answers with a partner before checking as a class.

5. Speaking – My Favorites

Use the discussion questions at the bottom of the worksheet.

Put students in pairs or small groups and have them talk about their own likes and favorite things.

Encourage students to ask follow-up questions when possible.

For homework, students can also write their answers to the discussion questions and bring them to the next class.

6. Grammar – Choose the Correct Word

Have students read the transcript in pairs.

As they read, they must choose the correct word or word form.

This slows down the conversation and encourages students to notice how natural English is constructed rather than simply reading for meaning.

After students finish, play the audio again so they can listen and check their choices.

7. Optional Mobile Activity

The grammar activity is also available online.

Display the webpage and create a QR code for the page. Students scan the code and open the activity on their phones.

They can complete the activity individually or in pairs and get a score when they finish.

8. Answer Key

The PDF includes an answer key for the teacher.

The multiple-choice answers also include timestamps showing when each answer is spoken, making it easy to replay specific parts of the conversation.

Suggested Lesson Flow

Vocabulary → First Listening → Compare → Listening for Detail → Discussion → Grammar → Final Listening

For extra practice:

Second Listening + Note-Taking → Written Discussion Answers → Mobile Activity

The longer conversation gives high-beginner students a chance to follow natural, unscripted English for an extended period while the pictures and repeated listening tasks provide plenty of comprehension support.
