Lesson 612: Cancun Vacation

Level: B1 Intermediate
Topic: Vacations and Travel
Grammar Focus: Simple Past, especially irregular past tense verbs
Skills: Listening, Vocabulary, Speaking, Grammar
Materials: Video/audio, worksheet, multiple-choice quiz, grammar activity

1. Vocabulary Warm-Up

Give students the worksheet.

Have them match the vocabulary words with the pictures. These are words that appear in the conversation.

Briefly review the words before listening.

2. First Listening – Put the Pictures in Order

Play the conversation.

Students listen and number the pictures in the order the words are mentioned.

After listening, have students compare answers with a partner.

If needed, play the conversation again and let students add a few notes.

3. Comprehension Quiz

Turn to page two and have students look at the 10 multiple-choice questions.

Before playing the conversation again, ask students to answer as many questions as they can from memory based on the first listening.

Then play the audio or video again.

Students listen and confirm or change their answers.

Check answers as a class.

4. Grammar – Missing Words

Have students read the conversation in pairs.

As they read, they identify and complete the missing words in the script.

This works especially well for noticing the natural use of the simple past and irregular past tense verbs.

There are two options:

  • Print version: Students write the missing words on the worksheet.

  • Digital version: Students open the activity on their phones and type in the answers.

Afterward, play the conversation again so students can check their answers.

5. Speaking – Vacation Discussion

Use the discussion questions at the bottom of the worksheet.

Students talk with a partner about their own vacations and travel experiences.

You can do this immediately after the listening activities or save it until the end as a final speaking activity.

6. Optional Mobile Activity

Display the online lesson on your classroom screen.

Right-click the webpage and select Generate QR Code for This Page.

Students scan the QR code with their phones and open the digital activity.

They can then complete the grammar task individually or with a partner.

7. Answer Key / Self-Study

The worksheet includes an answer key for the teacher.

It can also be shared with adult learners or students doing self-study.

The answer key includes timestamps showing when each answer appears in the conversation, making it easy for students to go back and listen again.

Suggested Lesson Flow

Vocabulary → First Listening → Compare → Memory Quiz → Second Listening → Grammar Task → Vacation Discussion

This lesson works especially well because students hear the past tense used naturally in a real conversation while the pictures provide extra support for comprehension.

It can be used for in-class teaching, homework, or self-study.
