How to Use Substack with Your Students
Substack is a simple platform you can use to regularly share content with your students. It works a little like a newsletter, a blog, and a website all in one. You create a post, share your Substack with your students, and they can subscribe with their email address to receive new posts and updates.
One thing I really like about Substack is that you can include different types of media in a post. You can add text, images, links, audio, and video. This makes it useful for language teachers because you can give students something to read and listen to at the same time.
A simple way to use Substack for a class is:
- Create your Substack. Set up a place where you can regularly post material for your students.
- Create a post. Add a short message, lesson, question, or other content you want students to see.
- Add media. Include audio, video, images, or useful links when they support the lesson.
- Share your Substack. Give students the link so they can read your posts and subscribe for updates.
- Post regularly. You could create a daily message, weekly lesson, class update, or listening activity.
My own process can be very simple. I can record a message, use voice typing to create the text, and then include the original audio with the post. Students can then listen and read at the same time. Because the process is streamlined, it is possible to create new material without spending a lot of time preparing it.
