Teach Any Language: The A to Z of Free Software

Welcome to the Teach Any Language series on ELLLO. This is our A to Z of Free Software series. We're going to work through five modules and look at free software tools for every letter of the alphabet. More importantly, we're going to look at practical ways you can use these tools to teach and learn languages.

This course is designed for both teachers and students. If you're a teacher, you can use these tools and techniques to create materials for your students. And it doesn't matter what language you teach. It could be English, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, French, Japanese, or almost any other language. If you're a student, you can also use these tools to create lessons to teach your own language to other people. It's a great way to practice English while learning some useful teaching and technology skills at the same time.

The course has five modules:

1. Module 1: Teach Listening. Learn how to create listening activities using tools such as Audacity for recording and Canva for making worksheets. You'll learn different ways to create audio content and turn it into useful language-learning activities.
2. Module 2: Teach Vocabulary. Create interactive vocabulary activities and puzzles. We'll use tools such as Google Sheets to make digital puzzles and H5P to create online activities such as crossword puzzles.
3. Module 3: Teach Grammar. Explore different ways to make grammar more engaging. We'll use Loom to record grammar explanations and tools such as Padlet to present grammar and let students interact with the material.
4. Module 4: Create a Class. Take all the materials you've created and organize them into a learning environment. We'll look at tools such as Quizlet for creating classes and Skool for building an online community where you can post lessons and interact with students.
5. Module 5: Video Lessons. Learn how to create and share video content. We'll look at tools such as VEED for creating captioned videos and YouTube for hosting and sharing your lessons online.

Those are just a few examples. Each module contains several different tools, so there is a lot to explore. You don't need to use everything. The idea is to see what's possible, try the tools that interest you, and find the ones that work best for you and your students.

The course is based on a simple idea: learn by doing. We'll show you a tool, show you something you can create with it, and then show you how to make it yourself. Instead of just learning about educational technology, you'll actually use it to create real teaching materials.

Whether you're already a language teacher or you're a student interested in teaching your own language, I hope this series gives you plenty of ideas. You can start with any module that interests you, watch the tutorials, and begin creating your own lessons right away.
